Avengers: Doomsday may not stay on its current December 18, 2026 release date after all. According to multiple reports, Marvel Studios is strongly considering moving the film up one week to December 11 in an effort to avoid a direct showdown with Dune: Part Three.
The move would not be a panic reaction or a major delay. Instead, it is about one thing every major studio wants during opening weekend, IMAX and premium large format screens. Right now, Warner Bros. Pictures has already locked down many of those screens for Dune beginning December 18. If Marvel jumps to December 11, it would give Doomsday a full week on the biggest screens in the world before Dune arrives.
Fans have already started calling the clash “Dunesday,” thanks in part to a joke reportedly made by Robert Downey Jr. during a recent press event. The name spread fast online, with many fans hoping for a double-feature event similar to the “Barbenheimer” craze from 2023. But unlike that matchup, these two films are chasing the same audience, sci-fi fans and blockbuster moviegoers.
Even with the release date talk heating up, the film itself appears to be right on schedule. Principal photography wrapped at Pinewood Studios in September 2025, and the movie is now deep into post-production. Robert Downey Jr. has already finished filming his scenes as Victor von Doom, who is reportedly a multiversal version of the character that looks strikingly similar to Tony Stark.
Marvel’s biggest crossover yet is still moving full speed ahead
The cast list for Doomsday keeps getting bigger, and that is one reason fans are watching every update so closely. Marvel has confirmed that the entire team from The Fantastic Four: First Steps, including Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn and Ebon Moss-Bachrach, will have major roles in the second half of the film.
The movie will also feature the new Avengers led by Anthony Mackie’s Captain America and Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. Letitia Wright and Winston Duke are returning as Shuri and M’Baku, while members of the Thunderbolts are expected to connect directly to the film through a post-credits scene.
Marvel is also leaning hard into the multiverse. Following the success of Deadpool & Wolverine, Fox-era X-Men characters like Alan Cumming’s Nightcrawler and Channing Tatum’s Gambit are set to appear.
The possible move also helps set up Avengers: Secret Wars, which is still set for December 17, 2027. Insiders believe Doomsday ends on a huge cliffhanger, and Marvel clearly does not want that final moment buried under the giant shadow of Dune before the year is over. Right now, the December 11 date may not be official, but in Hollywood, it already feels like a matter of when, not if.
